Datacolor Awards $10,000 Photography Scholarship to Parsons - The New School for Design Student

On June 11, 2007, The New School for Design announced the results of the third annual Datacolor Photography Scholarship, following a student competition designed to support digital art and creativity in the field of photography.

Parsons photography department junior Chris Nesbit was named the winner by a panel of prestigious industry professionals, and awarded a $10,000 scholarship. By juxtaposing drawings of buildings long since renovated or torn down on top of the current landscape, Nesbit's entry addresses urban memory, and the importance of the past in the contemporary urban landscape. In his award-winning collection, Nesbit combines the past and the present to demonstrate an intersection of our contemporary lives with the history of places now lost.

Honorable mentions Silvia Laserna and Anna Skladmann each won the Datacolor PrintFIX PRO™ Suite, an invaluable tool for monitor calibration, and printer profiling in an RGB workflow. In their impressive collections, Laserna focused on humanizing and capturing the spirit of impoverished and underprivileged in Ghana, and Skladmann explored the duality between childhood and adulthood in the lives of privileged children living as part of Russia's "Nouveau-Riche."

Expert Advice
Print Optimization and Profiling for Canvas

By Daniel Vézina, Technical Director
Les Productions Numart Inc. (QC, Canada)

Photographers typically print an image based on the memory they have of the scene they shot. They also use digital adjustments to improve the image to get improved contrast, colors, or flesh tones. The goal is to get a nice and pleasing result, but not necessary the absolute color of the original subject.

The situation is very different when reproducing a painting or other natural media artwork. Color accuracy is one of the most important things for a Fine Art printer. The customers expect more than a pretty result, they want prints that show exactly the same colors as their originals paintings. The customers will inevitably compare the print and the original side by side where the human eye can easily detect subtle differences between the images. Perfectly identical results are impossible due to the color gamut and density limitations of the ink and media we use. This is why it is so difficult to make a good Fine Art print. In addition it is often necessary to print the same image on different fine art papers and canvas and still get the closest color match possible between each of these media and the original.

Photoshop Tip of the Month
Repositioning Marquees

If you start to make a Rectangular Marquee tool (M) selection and discover that you don't have the selection positioned where you want it, don't start over. Before you finish creating the Marquee, press and hold the Spacebar, reposition the selection, and then finish making the selection. This trick also works with the Crop tool and the Shape tools.
