Expert Advice
Linear Fine Art Paper Output with PrintFIX PRO 2.0
|
Fine art papers, both the matte type and the new gloss art papers, tend to clog in the dark shadow areas. PrintFIX PRO 2.0 has a new Advanced Adjustments section that includes a Shadow Detail Slider. Setting this slider to +5 will reduce the shadow clogging typical of art papers, as shown in the accompanying graph, which compares gray ramps printed from two profiles, one at default settings, and one using a +5 Shadow Detail setting. Other types of paper may profit from other types of adjustments, so be sure to remember this slider whenever you have issues with shadow rendition.

Photoshop Tip of the Month
Correct in CMYK or RGB?
|
We've been asked the question of whether to correct in CMYK or RGB a hundred times. As a general rule, we try to do as much color correction as possible in RGB mode, and if we're going to use the image on press, we only convert to CMYK at the end of the correction process. The main reason is that CMYK mode throws away data-a lot of data-and why would you want to correct an image with significantly less data than your scanner can capture? We want as much data as possible while correcting images, and when we're done, then we'll convert to CMYK (under Image, choose Mode) and toss the data that won't be used on press.

Featured Photographer
Sarah Silver
|
Sarah's love of photography began as a child when she assisted her grandfather in his studio darkroom. From that time forward, a camera was never far from her hand. Studying both classical and modern dance from an equally young age, Sarah has always had an appreciation of movement. After completing her first degree in Middle East studies from Vassar College, she found that her true calling was to combine both of her passions: photography and movement. She applied for graduate studies in photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

|
While finishing her Master's Degree in Photography, Sarah was chosen to shoot for Surface Magazine's Avant Guardian issue. This fashion shoot marked the true beginning of Sarah's professional career as a photographer. Using dancers as models in high fashion, Sarah's style gelled. Next, Sarah shot her graduate thesis, two fashion stories, using the modern dance group Stephen Petronio Dance in clothing by Prada and Imitation of Christ. These photographs have since appeared in several magazines including PDN/PIX, Italian Vogue, Elle and Time Out NY.
It was while Sarah was planning her thesis that she recognized the importance of technology in her work. She adopted a completely digital workflow in March of 2001 and has been shooting with a Sinar medium format digital back ever since. For Sarah, shooting digital eliminated the uncertainty factor in movement shooting. This digital element in her work has also helped her to form relationships with Hasselblad, Sinar, Broncolor, and ColorVision. In Addition, for the 2003 year Sarah was chosen to join twelve photographers (legends Joyce Tenneson and Patrick Demarchelier are included in that list) as a Hasselblad Master.
