Color Management

Color Management - An easy introduction to consistent true colors in capture - edit - print
By Klaus Bjarner

Final words and a recap

I hope that you now have a better understanding of color management - when broken down to basics; color management is actually quite simple. It is just a matter of mapping how the device displays colors by measuring the build in faults or variances. When we know these variances we can compensate for them and there by achieve true and accurate colors.

Editing color sensitive work on a system that is not color calibrated is like driving a car while only looking through the rear view mirror. You have no way of knowing how your adjustments affect the result. Color management is about accuracy and respect for your time and work.

This concludes this brief introduction to color calibration. To sum it up you need to:

  1. Buy monitor color calibration hardware like the Spyder3Elite, and remember to re-calibrate every 2-4 weeks.
  2. Buy a color calibration unit for your printer like the Spyder3Print, and profile the different papers you use.
  3. Set up your software to use these paper/printer profiles when printing.

Color management is complex and yet so simple at the same time. I know it can be a lot to process at first but having read this book you already know more about color management than most people do.

Good luck in your quest towards beautiful accurate colors.
